Thread: Default Settings re. PM Notifications

I note the the default settings for PM notifications, both via e-mail and pop-up, are that both are deactivated.

From past experience elsewhere, I can say that this is problematic when a Mod. or Admin. PMs a member re. a matter that requires their immediate attention, and the member is not in the habit of frequently checking their CP for PMs.

It would be better to have the default settings be for both notification types to be activated.

Given the choice of one only, I'd activate the e-mail notice, as many whose prompt attention is needed don't visit daily. The e-mail at least guarantees that they get the heads-up regardless of their level of forum activity. And, for the important missives, they cannot then say "But, you never e-mailed me," an excuse that I've heard on too many occasions.

Otherwise, a Mod./Admin. needs to go to the Mod. CP, and check to find out if the member in question has the e-mail notification turned on; and, if not, manually copy/paste their e-mail address into an out-of band missive in order to contact them.

And, about human behavior.

The matter of PM notification settings never entered my mind until a member complained about not getting an important PM. In that case, he'd turned off the acceptance of all e-mail, including from Admin.! After that I got in the habit of checking the Mod. CP for those whose activities levels were very low, so as to avoid having PMs effectively going into a black hole.

Reminds me of the works of the 60s by Margaret Keane, who became famous for what came to be know as "Waifs," "Sad Eyes," "Big Eyes" and "Keane Eyes."
